Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Was Big From the Start, 100 Years Ago

But it was elephants, not balloons, leading the way.

It’s a beloved holiday tradition: Giant balloons loom over Manhattan, electrifying kids and nostalgic adults, and even inspiring key scenes in a Ghostbusters film. But it wasn’t always thus. Bloomberg Businessweek photo editor Jane Yeomans dug through the archives for images to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924.
