Europe Urges Restraint After 22 Killed in Madagascar Protests

European and other foreign governments called for restraint after several people died in youth-led protests in Madagascar.

The Indian Ocean island nation is grappling with its most serious political crisis in years, after demonstrations erupted on Sept. 25 over persistent power outages and water shortages. The rallies continued this week, despite President Andry Rajoelina bowing to the protesters’ demands and firing the government on Monday.
