While median household income has fallen 5.7 percent since 2008, the price of goods and services tracked by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has increased 7 percent on an inflation-adjusted basis through July of this year. Cigarettes, health care, and college tuition cost a lot more. Still, it’s cheaper to buy a wide-screen television and toys—and to fill your gas tank.
