Election 2020

When Is My Voter Registration Deadline?

Published: | Updated:

Amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, many states have shifted deadlines and expanded registration options. Here’s what you need to know to register to vote in the 2020 general election.*

*Military and overseas voters have slightly different deadlines and processes, and should check with their state for guidelines. Also, some states might have a different process for physically disabled or homebound voters.

What’s the voter registration deadline in my state?

Note: North Dakota is the only state without voter registration. Registration in New Hampshire is an in-person process, except for those absent or disabled. Voters in Vermont may register up to and including Election Day, but the state recommends registering by Oct. 30 for a voter’s name to appear on the checklist so they don’t have to fill out an application at the polls.

I missed my deadline. Does my state offer same-day registration?

Yes, on Election Day and during early voting
Yes, on Election Day only
Not on Election Day, during early voting only
Not at all
Not available
Note: Early registration voting also includes states where you can register during “in person absentee” voting. In Rhode Island, if you missed the registration deadline, you can go to your city/town hall on election day and vote for President/Vice President only.
